Can I tell you that crispy fried onion rings are one of my all-time favorite must-eat-during-Game-Time foods. Whenever I go to a sports bar (which is probably once every few years), the item that I always order are big pile of onion rings.

I have had the annoying pleasure of frying onion rings at home and they are a drag to make. There is hot oil, which is obviously never ideal because the disposing, and possible spillage and splatters which are cumbersome.

Luckily, there are baked onion rings that taste—in my humble opinion—just as good. Regular onion rings don’t rely on bread crumbs to add any crispiness because they have flour and the hot oil. But since we don’t have the hot oil, we need some added crunch. Panko bread crumbs do a great job with adding wonderful texture. I served them and dipped them in ranch because there’s nothing better. Oh and of course, feel free to double this recipe if you’re watching the game with more than four people.

    Ingredients

  • Recipe:
  • 1 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 large egg whites
  • 1 tablespoon hot sauce of choice
  • 1 yellow onion, cut into 1/4-inch rings
  • 2 cups panko bread crumbs
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • Cooking spray

    Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Line a baking sheet with foil or parchment and set aside.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together the milk, egg whites and hot sauce. Add the yellow onions and toss until combined.
  3. In another medium bowl, add the panko crumbs. In another small bowl, add the flour. Dip the onion rings in the flour and then return them to the milk mixture. And then proceed to dip them in the bread crumbs. Transfer them to the baking sheet. Spray them lightly with cooking spray and sprinkle the onion rings with a few pinches of salt.
  4. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes, until browned and crispy.

Yield: Serves 4 (as an appetizer)
