Halloween Monster Cupcakes

It's that time again this year when parents like me are scouring the internet for Halloween treat ideas for class parties. When I used to be the room mom for my daughters' classes I always challenged myself to bring something beyond either pumpkin or spider web decorated cookies and cupcakes.
Fortunately my daughters are now old enough to decorate their own treats with very little help from me. Over the weekend we made these Halloween Three Eyed Monster decorated cupcakes which did not require any special pasty bags or tips. Instead, we piped multiple spikes using a sandwich bag we filled with frosting and cut the tip off. Mini marshmallows and black piping gel were used for the eyes. Three different types of colored cake batter elevated the traditional white cupcake into a "spooktacular" treat.
Today I am going to show you how to make these multicolored cupcakes for your Halloween party. So let's get started.
Prepare the cake batter according the package instructions and divide the batter between three bowls. Tint each bowl with black, green, and purple food coloring.
Fill each baking cup 2/3 full with alternating layers of color batter.
Bake the cupcakes according to package directions. Remove the cupcakes from the oven when done to cool.
Fill a plastic zip top bag with frosting which has been tinted green. Seal the bag. Snip a bottom corner by 1/4″.
Squeeze the frosting through the tip, like squeezing toothpaste, in the center of the cupcake. Attach three marshmallows using the frosting as glue.
Working around the eyes, continue to squeeze droplets of frosting over the top surface of each cupcake. When the cupcake is covered, apply three black dots with piping gel on top of each marshmallow.
