Meet Kelly Carlisle
Kelly Carlisle's upbringing in East Oakland, a crime-ridden and economically disadvantaged neighborhood, led her to enlist in the US Navy as a means to escape the environment that she describes as both poor and tough.
After the Navy, Kelly bounced around jobs for a while, until she found gardening. Farming, gardening and growing, she claims, made her a better person.
Kelly realized that growing food and teaching others about eating healthy food could be way to give back to, and make a difference in her community.
In August of 2010, she founded Acta Non Verba (Latin for "deeds not words"): Youth Urban Farm Project, a non-profit urban farm that focuses on serving at-risk youth from kindergarten to 8th grade.
