With its lush green mountains, beautiful ancient Mayan ruins, and vibrant street markets filled with tropical fruits, vegetables, and handmade crafts, Guatemala is rich in history and culture including its food. Many years my husband and I traveled to Guatemala with a team of people helping to build a community village. This would be the first of two trips for me to this beautiful country. Both visits included a stop in the city of Antigua.
Known for its cobblestone streets, historical colonial churches, and Spanish Baroque-influenced architecture, one of my fondest memories was enjoying a refreshing non-alcoholic drink called limonada con soda with every meal. Limonada con soda is a thirst-quenching drink made with fresh squeezed lime juice, sugar, and carbonated mineral water. A popular drink in Guatemala, this beverage is a must-drink if you ever visit this gorgeous country.
Fortunately for me, making Limonada con soda at home is not difficult at all and is very enjoyable on a hot summer day especially in Seattle where it was just under 100 degrees F. outside this past weekend. Traditionally made with limes, lemons can be substituted, and club soda makes a great substitute for sparking mineral water. This recipe is not overly sweet and can be easily adapted to your liking. Enjoy!
