8 Healthy Soul Food Recipes

As filmmaker Byron Hurt shows in his eye-opening film Soul Food Junkies, soul food may be good for the soul, but it’s not always so great for the body. But with a little tweaking and creativity, soul food can be healthy and flavorful.

Here are eight recipe cards featuring delectable and healthy soul food recipes. Enjoy! And congratulations to our Healthy Soul Food Recipe Contest winner, Carol A. White, whose recipe for Spicy Roasted Sweet Potatoes won the contest and is now featured among the recipe cards!

We had so many fantastic recipe submissions, and it was very difficult for our panel of five Independent Lens judges and Byron Hurt to come up with our top picks. You can find all the recipe submissions under Carol White’s recipe. A big thank-you to everyone who sent in their recipes!
