We’re thrilled to report that The Invisible War, a groundbreaking film exposing the epidemic of rape in the U.S. military, is one of five nominees for an Academy Award for best documentary feature.
The film has already helped focus military and political attention on one of America’s most shameful and best-kept secrets. Later this month, Congress will be holding hearings on sexual abuse in the military.
“Independent Lens is exceptionally proud to have supported The Invisible War since its early production stages,” says Lois Vossen, Independent Lens senior series producer. “Leadership has always been a hallmark of the U.S. military. Now it is coming to terms with the challenge of how to protect the women in its ranks.
“Director Kirby Dick and producer Amy Ziering tracked down the hidden stories behind the numbers and revealed an epidemic. This film has been instrumental in bringing the issue to light, and providing the impetus for positive change,” Vossen says.
Congratulations to filmmaker Kirby Dick and the rest of the team behind The Invisible War! We’ll be airing the film on May 13. And we’ll be on the edge of our seats on February 24 during the 85th Academy Awards ceremony!
