Sad News about Robin Poor Bear

November 24, 2015 by Craig Phillips in Announcements

This weekend we received sad news about the subject of the Independent Lens/FRONTLINE film Kind Hearted Woman. Robin Poor Bear, a.k.a. Charboneau, passed away this Friday at home in North Dakota. We will continue to share updates as they are released.

Our hearts here at Independent Lens go out to Robin’s family, especially her two children. It was not that long ago that Robin sent us an update on their lives. May her memory continue to be a shining light for her kids, and may her story continue to be an inspiration to women and girls who have been victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse.

Rest in peace, Robin.

Information about services for Robin, including a place you can share your own thoughts and memories about her, can be found here.

FRONTLINE shares their own remembrance.

A lovely tribute to Robin’s legacy, by Mark Rogers.

Robin’s daughter Darian posted a statement about her mother’s passing:

“I would like to thank the community for coming together and helping and praying for my brother and I. Also thank you to Evans funeral home. They have taken such good care of her and have been really caring and delicate with everything during this difficult time. Thank you for All the donations we have received. Sister Joann Streifel, Betty Jo Krenz and I will continue forward with mom’s dream. The creator just needed her back home, he needed her spirit back. And her work here was done. I know I will never be able to measure up to her, but it’s our time to take what she has taught us and finish what she started with the help of Joann and Betty Jo.”

Update #2: A Fund

We have since learned, via Darian, that a GoFundMe campaign has been set up for Kind Hearted Woman Dream Shelter:

We are a small group of women who are fighting to keep Robin PoorBears dream alive.  We lost an amazing woman who fought so hard to shine the light on domestic [violence] and sexual assault, Robin may have passed on but her dream is still alive in us.  We are working with attorneys and her children to make sure that her shelter will come to life.
