The Calling Goes Live and Online

Ever watched a film and then chatted with the people in it in real time without ever leaving your sofa? Well, you’re about to. We’re pulling out the stops for a special film coming up: The Calling by Danny Alpert. The two-part series airs on back-to-back nights December 20 and 21 at a special time – 9 PM on PBS nationwide. In a special, exclusive preview event on Thursday, December 9, we’re hosting our first-ever live online social screening followed by a live panel discussion and chat.

Alpert’s film explores the nature of “a calling” through seven young people of various faiths who are pursuing careers in the clergy. What makes young people in the United States go into religious careers at a time when — if you look at what is celebrated by the mainstream media — it seems almost an anachronism in modern American society? It’s a dialogue that the filmmaker has continued as an open conversation on the website What’s Your Calling?

To extend that conversation even further, we’re hosting our first-ever social media screening of the film, followed by a panel discussion with the seven subjects of the film as well as Danny Alpert, coming up this Thursday, December 9 from 5:30pm PT / 8:30pm ET. To see a special half-hour preview of the film and then watch and participate in the panel discussion live, all you need to do is visit the Independent Lens Facebook page at the appointed hour!
