Season 5, Episode 9: The Eye of the Beholder

Alejandro G. Iñárritu is a five-time Academy Award-winning director, writer and producer, and winner of the 2006 Best Director prize at the Cannes Film Festival. He is the first Mexican filmmaker ever nominated for either director or producer in the history of the Academy Awards. Iñárritu made his feature directorial debut in 2001 with Amores Perros, which received an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language film. For his next feature, 21 Grams (2003), he ventured into English-language cinema, then followed with Babel (2006), which earned seven Academy Award nominations including Best Director and Best Picture. These three films form a trilogy; each one breaks with traditional narrative structures, fragmenting time and space and shifting points of view to explore the human condition.

With his following film Biutiful (2010), Iñárritu returned to Spanish-language cinema and earned another Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language film. Then in 2015, he won the Best Director Oscar for Birdman: Or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance),which also won Oscars for Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay and Best Cinematography. The following year, Iñárritu won his second consecutive Academy Award for Best Director for The Revenant, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy, which he also produced and co-wrote with Mark L. Smith. Most recently, Iñárritu directed the virtual reality installation CARNE y ARENA (Virtually present, Physically invisible), which previewed at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival as the first VR project ever included in the official selection of the festival, receiving international critical acclaim. The installation, which explores the human condition of refugees and immigrants, was then presented at the Fondazione Prada in Milan and is currently showing at LACMA in Los Angeles, the Tlatelolco Museum in Mexico City, and in Washington DC. In 2017, Iñárritu was presented a special Oscar for CARNE y ARENA, a recognition from the Academy as an exceptional storytelling experience
