Elizebeth Smith Friedman was the first American cryptanalyst. Her groundbreaking codebreaking for the U.S. government brought down rum runners and drug smugglers and smashed Nazi spy rings. She also enjoyed breaking codes and ciphers for fun with her husband. In honor of the heroine of The Codebreaker, we asked puzzle maker Brendan Emmett Quigley to create a crossword inspired by her life and legacy—a crossword with a cipher and a secret message for you to decode!
