Diary of an Amazon Journey

Naturalist and explorer George Cherrie was one of the men Theodore Roosevelt took with him on his 1913-14 journey to an uncharted river in the Brazilian Amazon. Cherrie, a seasoned adventurer, had taken dozens of trips to Central and South America, collecting specimens for major museums. On the Roosevelt expedition, led by Brazilian explorer Cândido Rondon, Cherrie kept a meticulous diary, excerpted below from a transcript prepared by Joseph R. Ornig, housed at the American Museum of Natural History.
