In 1914, the United States Army ranked seventeenth in the world, right behind Serbia’s. So when Woodrow Wilson asked Congress for a declaration of war in 1917, the United States faced the daunting task of recruiting and training soldiers to fight. Millions of propaganda posters were pasted up in cities and towns across the country, urging men to enlist.
