Bad Things Were Going to Happen
Freedom Summer volunteers were aware of the danger involved in going to Mississippi. That danger was confirmed early in the summer when the volunteers learned that three members of their group—Mickey Schwerner, Andrew Goodman, and James Chaney—had gone missing in Mississippi. But as volunteer Dorothy Zellner explains, "If you cared about this country, if you cared about Democracy, then you had to go down."
