Miss Mississippi Finds Trouble

Barbara Jan Nave was crowned Miss Mississippi in 1963. When her family hosted Freedom Summer volunteers in their home, life for them turned ugly. Her mother Malva Heffner recalled, "I went downtown one day, and friends that I had known for ten years would turn and walk away from me, or hang their heads. Some would speak and walk on as if I had leprosy or something."
