Opposition to Freedom Summer
Not everyone agreed that bringing students volunteers from across the country into Mississippi in 1964 was a good idea. Others believed it was the only way to make the nation pay attention to what was happening in the state. Organizer Charlie Cobb recalls being convinced by Fannie Lou Hamer. "Mrs. Hamer backed me up into a corner and said, 'Well, Charlie, I'm glad you came. What's the problem with having more people come? How can you be opposed?' And eventually we decided to go ahead with Freedom Summer."
