A 300-Year Struggle

In this 1875 copy of a 1798 map of New Orleans, one can roughly gauge the width of levees the French built along Bayou Metarie (center left) and Bayou Gentilly (upper right) by the extent of land on either side of the bayous that is not marked by tree symbols.
