GUEST: My father acquired it in the '40s. I grew up in New Jersey, and that's where we lived. He and my mom were big antiquers. Frequently, my sister and I were dragged along. And he bought it at an antiques store, probably, I would guess in the late '40s.
APPRAISER: Well, this glass is made by Schneider.
GUEST: Right.
APPRAISER: It says "Schneider France" here, which tells us it was made for export. There were two Schneider brothers, and they, circa 1900, worked at the Daum factory. Then they went off on their own to do their own glass.
GUEST: I see.
APPRAISER: In World War I, they ceased making their art glass in order to do glass for hospitals.
GUEST: Wow.
APPRAISER: This particular piece, as we say, it's a monumental piece. I think we measured, it's 33 inches tall. Beautiful orange and yellows and the beautiful blue base on it. Now, this particular piece was made about 1930.
GUEST: Uh-huh.
APPRAISER: In a plain Deco style. There's a little bit of what we refer to as a cluthra look to this. It's a style with these little circles in here. It's not fully cluthra, but it's very similar. And they did go on to make clear glass and clear crystal. They were a company that was well known, has a well-known name today. We do have up on the top a very, very minor chip. It's not even a chip.
GUEST: Yes.
APPRAISER: Some people call it a flea bite. It's so tiny, it can be buffed. There are people, professionals that can do that and buff that down to smooth it off. It will always hurt it a little tiny bit, for the tiny chip.
GUEST: Uh-huh.
APPRAISER: But I would put this in a value range, for insurance, of $3,000 to $5,000.
GUEST: Wow, that's terrific. My mother would never let him show it. She never liked it, and after I inherited it, my wife never liked it so it stayed in the closet.
APPRAISER: Oh my.
GUEST: When my son got married 15 years ago, it was in his closet and I offered to give it to him, and his wife didn't like it either, so maybe this will encourage my wife to get it out of the closet and move it into a little more higher priority area.
