GUEST: An antique dealer that I had purchased some other furniture of a similar Renaissance style knows that I collect it, had received this from a picker who had found it in a garage sale. It was broken, but she called me as she was ready to go to a show to try to sell it here in Northern California. The rest is history. I didn't let it go out of Sacramento.
APPRAISER: Like you said, the table is spectacular in the sense of this Western theme. The base is a stock base, made in America, probably New York City area, and then the top would have been imported from Europe. Normally, they would import European tops of all marquetry designs. This one happened to be imported with blank panels. So as you can see, the central panel scene, and then the four flanking panel scenes. And then about 1875, the piece was embellished with these Western scenes in a very Catlin-esque style. I feel very comfortable, with the restoration, that we could get $20,000, maybe $30,000. If the piece was more original, was untouched without the breaks, I think we might be able to get $30,000 to $44,000.
GUEST: Well, I'm very pleased.
APPRAISER: How much did you pay for it?
GUEST: $2,500, and restoration on top of that.
APPRAISER: So about $3,500?
GUEST: $3,600.
