GUEST: This is a letter from my husband's great-great-great grandfather to his wife at the end of the Civil War. And it's come down through the family.
APPRAISER: That's great. And it's a good one to keep, because he is about 35 miles from Lynchburg, Virginia, on April 9, 1865, which is the day that General Lee surrendered the Army in Northern Virginia. Obviously, the war goes on for a little while longer, but for him, this is the end of the war. I would say at auction, I would put an estimate of $300 to $500 on it.
GUEST: Okay!
APPRAISER: It's a great letter.
GUEST: I'm glad we kept it.
APPRAISER: I'm glad you did, too.
GUEST: Yes.
