GUEST: I brought a painting that I bought at a garage sale about a year ago. I paid $7.50.
APPRAISER: The artist here is August Müller. Now, he was a member of the so-called Munich School of German painting. He was a genre artist, and when I say genre painting, I'm talking about these scenes of everyday life that became very popular, especially in the late 19th century. I would date it to around 1860s, 1870s. August Müller painted these scenes, very similar to this, of mothers with infants, that appealing subject matter of everyday life. This one, in particular, is just very well executed and just very detailed, and the way the sunlight comes through. Munich School painters like August Müller are very much in demand. And a lot of their paintings, when they sell at auction, they sell in Europe. I think that a fair and conservative auction estimate would be $8,000 to $12,000.
Guest: Very good.
