GUEST: I was told it was a jade item. And I would really like to know if that's so. I bought it from an antique dealer. I paid $600.
APPRAISER: It is in fact jade. And it is a Chinese table screen. Chinese table screens have a long history. They were often used as a departure from day-to-day work. And often these are marble with natural inclusions or they're carved with a serene, foliate landscape.
GUEST: Okay.
APPRAISER: And in fact, this jade screen has some peonies, bamboo work, plum blossoms. So a nice floral escape from the mundane. It's a nice hardwood, Indian lotus carved stand. This style of stand was done in the late Qing dynasty. It's about 1900.
GUEST: Okay.
APPRAISER: In today's market, a conservative auction estimate would be between $2,000 and $3,000.
GUEST: Okay.
APPRAISER: And it should be insured for between $4,000 and $5,000.
GUEST: Okay, well, that is good news.
