GUEST: I received these as a birthday present from my sister, who got them from a friend of a friend who didn't care about them and was giving them away. So my sister knew who Edith Head was and she knew how much I love Edith Head gowns, and so she got the ones for me that were signed.
APPRAISER: Not only are they original sketches by Edith Head, they are glamorous sketches for varying movie stars of the 1950s. Edith Head was one of the premier couturiers for the studio during that particular period. This one was done for Mary Martin. And of course, again, we have Edith Head's signature. And then this particular sketch was done for Barbara Stanwyck.
GUEST: I love her movies.
APPRAISER: Yes. She was one of my classic all-time favorites. This one is signed on the back. So the signature, the signature of the approval of the director, as well as the overall cost of this garment was $329.
GUEST: 1949. That's a lot of money.
APPRAISER: 1949.
GUEST: (laughter)
APPRAISER: And then we come to the absolute all-time premier one. This is my favorite. A glamorous, glorious outfit for Betty Hutton. And this garment was $611, approved.
GUEST: Yeah. (laughing)
APPRAISER: Have you any idea of the approximate value of these pieces?
GUEST: I thought they'd be worth maybe $150 to $200 each.
APPRAISER: Oh... (both laughing)
GUEST: No, more?
APPRAISER: These sketches, original by Edith Head, are worth $1,100 to $1,200 apiece.
GUEST: What?!
APPRAISER: That's correct.
GUEST: Really?
