GUEST: I found this in 1971 at an antique shop. Years later, I happened to be looking through the White House memento book that you get when you take the White House tour. Lo and behold, on one of the pages was a picture of this.
APPRAISER: There's a tradition going back to George Washington, of course, of the president and the first lady furnishing the White House with their own porcelain. Now tell me, how much did you pay for it?
GUEST: $208, the eight dollars being sales tax. (chuckles)
APPRAISER: And you've still got the receipt?
GUEST: Still have the receipt, yes.
APPRAISER: I would say, if this came to auction, it would attract a lot of attention. The similarity between this one and the Franklin Pierce one would help it along.
GUEST: Uh-huh.
APPRAISER: But only to a limited extent. I believe that this would bring today at auction at least $2,000.
GUEST: Mm-hmm.
APPRAISER: And perhaps as much as $4,000.
GUEST: Mm-hmm.
