GUEST: This was given to me by a couple who were very good friends with my parents. He was a world-renowned botanist in the late '50s, early '60s. He was presented with this in China at the end of a lecturing tour.
APPRAISER: It's Chinese porcelain. At the base of the jardiniËre, we see a mark. It's the Qianlong mark.
GUEST: Qianlong.
APPRIASER: Which is an 18th century mark.
GUEST: Yes.
APPRAISER: However, the object was made probably during the late 19th century. We know this is a late 19th-century example. The enamel work is good, but not great. The in-painting is exceptional on 18th-century pieces. The reason why this is a better-than-average example is twofold. Firstly, it's in wonderful condition. Secondly, we only see about 10% to 20% with the under tray. In today's market, it would have an auction estimate of about $3,000 to $5,000.
GUEST: Oh! That's more than I expected. Thank you.
