GUEST: About ten years ago, my wife's parents passed on. We went to settle the estate, and as we were cleaning out the house, we found that stuck way in the back of one of the dresser drawers with all the underwear and the other stuff.
APPRAISER: You almost have the history of what it's like to mine gold from this one pin.
GUEST: Really?
APPRAISER: Yes. You have gold quartz, some silver, you've got some turquoise, a dendrite agate in the center, and it's even dated. On the back is a patent date. It's for the mechanism of the pin-- 1877. In a retail environment, it would be worth between $800 and $1,200.
GUEST: Really?
APPRAISER: Yes. But the interesting thing is, about two or three years ago, the gold quartz market was a lot hotter. It would have been double in value.
GUEST: I'll have to hang onto it for a while.
