GUEST: I brought some political drawings from Oscar Cesare. I acquired them at a New Hampshire estate sale. Purchased about 100 of them or so, I believe.
APPRAISER: Uh-huh. And how much do you think you paid for each one?
GUEST: Turned out to be about $20 each.
APPRAISER: So Oscar Cesare was a very important political caricaturist in New York. Worked for "The New York Sun" and "The New York Evening Post" and other publications in the 1920s and '30s. He uses ink on paper, and then he uses this white gouache as highlight. In this work, I think he's bringing together the idea of money and the war machine. And here we have a soldier who's standing behind his cannon. And this is "Arms and the Man." Based on the few sales that I could find for his work at auction, I would value each one for about $300 apiece.
GUEST: Wow.
APPRAISER: Yep.
GUEST: Wow, that's exciting to hear.
