GUEST: I found this clock online when I was serving in Iraq. I was an officer in the Army, and, uh, we were there training the Iraqi army, and, uh, we had some downtime occasionally to, to use the internet, and I would unwind just looking for, for bargains, just to kind of feel normal a little bit. And this clock came up at a estate sale. I know it's Seth Thomas by the, the label, and I know they call it a pillar column, or pillar, pillar and scroll.
APPRAISER: Yes, the latter is exactly right. This is what we call a pillar and scroll. I would date this clock to about 1820.
GUEST: Wow.
APPRAISER: And they were able to produce a clock that the average man could afford. Before that, only the wealthy could afford a grandfather clock.
GUEST: Interesting.
APPRAISER: But now, here's a smaller clock. There's one problem on the clock, and that is, the reverse-painted glass has been replaced. Do you mind my asking how much you paid for the clock?
GUEST: It was about $200 or $300.
53:32 APPRAISER: In a retail setting, I think this clock is $600.
GUEST: Okay.
APPRAISER: If it had the original glass, probably about a $2,500 clock.
GUEST: Wow.
