Biography
Eric Hanks, AAA, founded M. Hanks Gallery in 1988. Specializing in African American art the gallery features works by major artists in the field including Elizabeth Catlett, Augusta Savage, Henry Tanner, Alma Thomas, Charles Ethan Porter, Edward M. Bannister, Charles White, Romare Bearden, Jacob Lawrence, Meta Warrick Fuller, and many others. In addition, he conducts art appreciation classes not only related specifically to African American art, but also focusing on general topics like appreciating abstract art.
Certified by the Appraisers Association of America, Hanks performs fine art appraisals for individual and institutional collectors. He is also a former member of the board of that organization.
Since 2013 he has been a Los Angeles County Arts Commissioner from the Second District, currently serving at the pleasure of Supervisor Holly Mitchell. From 2019 to 2020 he was vice president of the Commission and from 2020 to 2021 he was president.
Hanks also has authored articles and essays about several prominent African American artists, published in the St. James Guide to Black Artists, the International Review of African American Art, and various gallery exhibition catalogues from M. Hanks Gallery and the Harris Gallery, University of Laverne in Laverne, California.
