In the popular PBS KIDS series WordGirl, the main star is WordGirl's voracious vocabulary, but food plays a supporting role. With characters like The Butcher, Dr. Two Brains (who has a major cheese obsession), Kid Potato, and Chuck the Evil Sandwich-Making Guy, one has to wonder if WordGirl creators were starving when they developed the series. (See below for an exciting WordGirl giveaway!)
Although "Evil" is his middle name, Chuck is relatively harmless; his most diabolical act is covering WordGirl and Captain Huggy Face in ketchup so he can make a quick getaway! Since your kids may be WordGirl fans, we thought it would be fun to create a dish around this silly, vocabulary-challenged villain (with a sandwich for a head, and a weapon that shoots condiments). If you make Chuck Chunky Chicken Salad Sandwiches with your kids, here are some cooking vocabulary words you can practice along the way:
- Poach (cook slowly in liquid)
- Season (Add spices and herbs to give a recipe more flavor)
- Coarsely (Cut roughly or unevenly)
- Trim (cut a little bit around the edges)
- Simmer (a very low boil) We have three copies of WordGirl books to giveaway, each autographed by 7 of the cast members:
- Earth Day Girl
- Robot Rampage
- City Hall Sandwich
The contest is now closed. Congratulations to Theresa K., Beth and Phyllis!
