Phalaenopsis orchids, from the Greek words phalaina ("moth") and opsis ("appearance"), are one of the most easily recognized genera, with their flat, rounded petals and characteristic three-lobed lip at their blossoms' center. They are also one of the most popular orchids among novice orchidophiles, as they grow easily and rapidly and have long-lasting blossoms. The American Orchid Society recently honored this Phalaenopsis hybrid (Taisuco Kochdian) for its pristine beauty. The genus is native to tropical Asia, from southern India and Nepal east to Papua New Guinea, north to China and Taiwan, and south to Australia.
