Named for Richard Schomburgk, a German botanist who explored British Guiana during the 19th century, Schomburgkia splendida is a lithophyte, or rock-dwelling, orchid. It grows on river boulders in the wet forests of southwestern Colombia and northwestern Ecuador and is easily recognizable for its fringed petals. Despite its unusual natural growing conditions, S. splendida can be cultivated in pots.
