Next week, families across the country will be celebrating the 4th of July with magnificent firework displays, patriotic neighborhood parades, and potluck parties with foods decorated in the color palette of red, white, and blue. This will be the first year my family and I will not be in the city to enjoy a leisurely afternoon with good friends while feasting on everyone's homemade dishes. Instead, we are headed to the Oregon coast. If the weather cooperates, we hope to cook hotdogs on long sticks while roasting marshmallows on the beach.
