What Is Sanditon and What Can We Expect?
Sanditon is a sleepy seaside village, but for those with vision, like Tom Parker, it’s on its way to becoming a deluxe and fashionable resort! As for Sanditon the TV series, it’s a bold adaptation of Jane Austen’s final, unfinished work, about what happens when the spirited yet levelheaded Charlotte Heywood arrives in Sanditon as Parker’s guest…and what happens when she goes head-to-head with his witty, prickly, yet decidedly handsome brother, Sidney.
We can expect: Beaches and balls, romance and intrigue, fortune hunters and heart breakers, assembly rooms and bathing machines and much, much more! Plus, Sanditon is Jane Austen by way of master Austen adapter Andrew Davies (Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, Northanger Abbey and Emma, plus Bridget Jones’s Diary), so we can expect sparkling wit and addictive drama, as well as love with all its attendant triangles and obstacles.

Who are Sanditon's Cast and Characters?
Click the arrows below to find out more about some of Sanditon‘s key, unforgettable characters and the actors who portray them: Rose Williams, Theo James, Leo Suter, Kris Marshall, Anne Reid, and Crystal Clarke, among others!
Rose Williams
Rose Williams’s breakout role was in the historical drama series Reign, in which she starred as Claude de Valois, a French princess raised with the future Queen Elizabeth I and Mary, Queen of Scots. She also appeared on the big screen in the 2016 Emily Dickinson biopic A Quiet Passion and the 2019 comedy Changeland. She returned to TV in the 2019 British series Curfew alongside Sean Bean and Billy Zane, and in 2020, Williams will appear in the 15th-century dynastic series Medici.
Sidney Parker
Theo James is Sidney Parker, a charming, humorous and enigmatic—at least to Charlotte— self-made man. At times rigidly upright, he has a slightly wild side, which will come in handy as he moves between the bustle of London and the drama of Sanditon!
Theo James
MASTERPIECE viewers and Downton Abbey fans will remember actor Theo James’ unforgettable turn as the Turkish diplomat Kemal Pamuk, the man who died from a heart attack in a moment of passion with Lady Mary, thus laying the foundation for a scandal that would persist for seasons to come! Of his many big-screen roles, James is perhaps best known for portraying “Four” in the dystopian Divergent film trilogy. On the small screen, he helmed the crime-drama network series Golden Boy, and appeared as the clairvoyant protagonist in the British supernatural drama television series Bedlam.
Young Stringer
Young Stringer is a local builder working alongside his father to create the resort. His intelligence is matched by his decency, and he brings skill and level-headedness to Tom Parker’s sometimes overexuberant vision. But will such skill and intelligence lead to ambitions beyond his station? And what will happen if he develops romantic ambitions beyond his station, as well?
Leo Suter
MASTERPIECE fans may remember Leo Suter from his moving turn as Victoria Season 2’s ill-fated Edward Drummond, and delight to know that he stars in the upcoming Beecham House on MASTERPIECE! He’s also starred for two seasons in the British thriller series Clique.
Kris Marshall is Tom Parker
Tom Parker, Sanditon’s chief developer, is a big thinker with a big family and a big heart but a regrettably small wallet. Will his bold vision and unflappable spirit be enough to make Sanditon a reality?
Kris Marshall portrayed DI Humphrey Goodman in the TV series Death in Paradise, and was in the films Love, Actually and Death at a Funeral.
Lady Denham is a wealthy widow who relishes the power she holds over Sanditon and its residents, and won’t hesitate to flex it for business or for simple amusement. But is there more to Lady Denham than meets the eye (and the tight fist)?
Anne Reid (Last Tango in Halifax, Years and Years) was seen most recently on MASTERPIECE as Mrs. Thackeray, the cook in the 2011 Upstairs Downstairs reboot. MASTERPIECE fans may remember her turn as Mrs. Rouncewell in Bleak House; she also appeared in the 2006 Jane Eyre with Ruth Wilson.
Crystal Clarke is Miss Lambe
In Sanditon, Jane Austen described Miss Lambe as “a young West Indian of large fortune.” And indeed, the heiress’ great wealth—and her beauty—make her the object of intense interest when mysterious circumstances bring her to the nascent seaside resort.
Born and raised in the United States, Clarke graduated from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in 2014 and has been busy ever since! Most recently, she appeared in the science fiction series Black Mirror, and starred the recent adaptation of Agatha Christie’s Ordeal by Innocence alongside Matthew Goode (Downton Abbey) and Eleanor Tomlinson (Poldark). Her film credits include Annihilation, Assassin’s Creed, Star Wars Episode VIII, Woman in Gold and The King’s Daughter.
