As Seen In: Les Misérables Cast

Natalie Simpson as Sister Simplice
After appearing in productions with the Royal Shakespeare Company such as King Lear, Hamlet and Cymbeline, Natalie Simpson has made a name for herself with recent roles in Outlander as Phaedre, and now in Les Misérables as Sister Simplice, the holy sister who stays by Fantine’s side through her final days, and later lends another hand to Jean Valjean in his time of need.


Turlough Convery as Grantaire
Oh, Grantaire! Friend to Enjolras and Marius, fellow revolutionary, and a fan of a good drink. Turlough Convery plays the faithful friend, and MASTERPIECE fans will instantly recognize him as George Warleggan’s long time henchman Tom Harry on Poldark. Convery has also previously appeared in the hit series Lovesick and My Mad Fat Diary.


Derek Jacobi as Bishop Myriel
When Bishop Myriel shows Jean Valjean the first shred of kindness he’s experienced in 20 years, despite Jean Valjean’s attempt to rob him, he sets Valjean on the path to redemption that sets the tone for Les Misérables. The vital role is played by Derek Jacobi, who has commanded the screen for over 50 years in such films as Gladiator, Gosford Park and The King’s Speech, as well as in shows such as Dr. Who and Last Tango in Halifax. MASTERPIECE fans will recognize him from I, Claudius, as well as from Mystery!: Cadfael, Little Dorrit, and The Wyvern Mystery.


Emma Fielding as Nicolette
Emma Fielding stars as Nicolette, the kind servant to Monsieur Gillenormand who takes pity on Pontmercy and helps him to see his son Marius. She helps raise Marius under Gillenormand's roof through the years, and stays by the outspoken grandfather's side, even when it isn’t easy. Fielding is also currently starring in the third season of Unforgotten as Amy Hollis, the wife of murder suspect James Hollis (Kevin McNally). Fielding has also appeared in other MASTERPIECE shows such as Dark Angel, Arthur & George and Cranford.


Henry Lloyd-Hughes as Pontmercy
Henry Lloyd-Hughes brings to life Pontmercy, a soldier who just barely survives the doomed Battle of Waterloo, and the father of little Marius. MASTERPIECE fans know Lloyd-Hughes from his starring role on Indian Summers as Ralph Whelan, and from the third season of The Durrells in Corfu as Durant. He has also previously appeared in The Inbetweeners and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, and most recently had a role in Killing Eve.


Enzo Cilenti as Rivette
Enzo Cilenti plays Rivette, Javert’s right hand fellow police officer. Cilenti’s past work includes Game of Thrones (as wealthy slave trader Yezzan zo Qaggaz), Bridget Jones’s Baby, Luther (with Mrs. Wilson star Ruth Wilson) and The Last Tycoon. MASTERPIECE fans may know him from his roles on Grantchester and Wolf Hall.


Johnny Flynn as Félix Tholomyès
Johnny Flynn breaks hearts as Félix Tholomyès, Fantine’s lover and Cosette’s father, who leaves them high and dry to return home after a brief stay in Paris. Flynn is known for his work on the hit series Lovesick, and as William Dobbin in last year’s Vanity Fair. Flynn also starred in the West End’s production of Sam Shepard’s classic True West alongside Game of Thrones star Kit Harington. (Fun fact: Flynn’s half-brother Jerome Flynn also stars on Thrones as sellsword Bronn.)
