Recap: Episode 2

Episode 2 culminated in an exciting win and a tragic loss, arrived at by way of leeches and beaches, with a side of Cornish wrestlemania. Revisit Ross’ election suspense and Hugh’s melancholy deathbed, plus everything in between. But first, a cheer:
Ross, Ross,
He’s our man—
If he can’t “mend this sad, sorry, broken world,”
No one can!

  1. 1.

    Finally, Some Good News

News of the Enys-Penvenen “offshoot” has Dwight beaming, and Ross and Demelza calling for celebration. Caroline may take a while to get on board.

  2. 2.

    Soak It Up

To repair their marriage, Demelza and Ross certainly have their work cut out for them. But as long as he’s in a tub, she has a sponge, and candles are lit, there’s hope.

  3. 3.

    Paging Dr. Choake

Leeches are just one of the treatments in Dr. Choake’s medicine bag of horrors (see “trepanning,” and shudder). But it’s Dwight who best understands what’s really ailing Hugh: a heart broken by the knowledge that Demelza’s belongs to Ross.

  4. 4.

    Playing Dirty

In the David and Goliath wrestling matchup over Emma’s soul, Harry has might, and Sam has right. But from the eye gouges to the slander of Emma’s good name (“Yer welcome to ‘er soul, brother. I’ve already ‘ad ‘er body!“), it’s dirty tricks that ultimately seal Tom Harry’s triumph…such as it is.

  5. 5.

    Beach Confessions

When Drake and Morwenna share a tender reunion in their go-to soulmate setting, the beach, he asks if Ossie has been treating her better. Ossie’s sudden appearance to fetch his longsuffering wife provides Drake’s answer: he’s as vile as ever.

  6. 6.

    Giddy-up!

Ross and Demelza race to Tregothnan when they receive word from Dwight that Hugh’s condition is worsening.

  7. 7.

    Meet the Candidate!

When a delighted Ossie drops the bomb that Ross will replace Hugh as Truro’s candidate for MP, George can barely contain his rage.

  8. 8.

    Lovesick

Hugh makes one final, ardent push for Demelza’s love, the one thing that could cure him. But her sorrow and pity aren’t enough; by the end of the day, he will be dead.

  9. 9.

    Sorry Not Sorry

Emma sets the record straight for Sam re: her virginity, but draws the line at his continued attempts to save her soul. She’s gives him the old “It’s not you, it’s me,” and then, with a kiss, is off to Tahiti Tehidy. Poor Sam!

  10. 10.

    Whoops.

Ossie is surprised to learn that Rowella wasn’t pregnant after all. She ingeniously plays her long game, veering artfully from innocent to seductress, and toying with the vicar, who is left sputtering…and once again, utterly hooked.

  11. 11.

    Ross' Reckoning

As hard as it is to say goodbye, the time has come for our hero to depart for Westminster and fulfill his destiny: to mend this “sad, sorry, broken world. Because if Ross can’t do it, who can?
