Recap: Episode 3

A new baby, a new villain, a new actor playing Geoffrey Charles, and…Verity! No wonder this episode had a party! From speechifying at Westminster to bonding with his bros, catch up with Ross & Co. and relive all the best moments of Episode 3. #PoldarkPBS

  1. 1.

    Nailed It

Who is this young maverick from Cornwall, newly arrived in the House of Commons and already making waves? Why, it’s Ross Poldark, advocating for England’s suffering poor! With his first speech earning equal parts jeers and cheers, he can consider his Parliamentary debut a success.

  2. 2.

    Here She Goes Again

It’s been a while since Demelza last played matchmaker. With two wins under her belt (Verity & Blamey and Dwight & Caroline), she’s ripe for another round—especially if it means healing her brother’s broken heart—and Rosina seems like the perfect candidate.

  3. 3.

    Monster-in-Law

Ossie’s mother, the terrifying Lady Whitworth, descends on the vicarage to enable her vile son, further torture Morwenna, and oversee the education of poor little John Conan. Governesses of Cornwall, you’ve been warned.

  4. 4.

    Horace, Prepare to be Neglected.

With new mother and newborn daughter safe, a joyful Dwight plunges into the ocean in a celebratory swim. Welcome, Miss Sarah Caroline Enys!

  5. 5.

    Two Birds, One Stone

What’s the nefarious new scheme that has George looking so smug? Destroying Ross Poldark and simultaneously taking down his main competitor, Pascoe. Through bad investments, the attorney Nat Pearce lost his clients’ money without their knowledge. Because it had been deposited at Pascoe’s Bank, the bank—Pearce’s guarantor—will fail when the money comes due upon Pearce’s death. And all of Ross’ capital will go down with the rest.

  6. 6.

    Party, Down

A lavish, aristocrat-infested party at Trenwith is the worst possible place for Dwight to process something deeply troubling about his newborn daughter, Sarah. He tries to hide his anguish, but his fleeting smile betrays his heartbreak to us, if not to social butterfly Caroline.

  7. 7.

    Beach Brawl

Tholly’s bad behavior with (not actually a) Widow Crocker provoked the entire Crocker clan to seek revenge not just on the dirty old sea dog but on Drake, Sam, and the rest of Ross’ crew. Ross arrives just in time to dispatch the brutes with his bare-knuckle blows. And to win his way back into the hearts of his squad, who’d imagined a distance and a difference between them.

  8. 8.

    Stop. Going. To. Trenwith.

Post-fight, an exhilarated Ross drops by the party at Trenwith where he encounters Elizabeth, and the two catch up on Geoffrey Charles’ exploits and George’s suspicions about Valentine. It’s all fond old friends bonding until they’re interrupted by George’s new buddy, the supremely slimy Monk Adderley.

  9. 9.

    Strangers No More

Those who remember the last time Ross gave Demelza a gift (see Season 2’s steamy stocking scene) will not be disappointed as she unwraps and tries on his gift of earrings. After a heart-to-heart about Hugh and Elizabeth, Demelza asks if they are still strangers, and Ross simply slays us with his answer: “Yes. But strangers who know every inch of each other’s skin. So perhaps we should begin again from there.”
